A numerical anatomy-based modelling of bamboo microstructure

Bamboo has attracted considerable recent interest in sustainable buildings as the fastest-growing natural material retaining mechanical properties similar to structural wood while being an effective CO2 absorber during its growth. Previous efforts estimate bamboo and their behaviour using homogenisation techniques used simplified assumptions on geometry of inhomogeneous microstructure, hence these methods failed account for different homogenised directions lateral culm. This study presents a novel anatomy-based numerical microstructure analysis that accurately represents geometrical features material, leading transversely anisotropic model. We compare resulting elastic those obtained with state-of-the-art analytical approaches found literature. It is concluded our representative volume element provides better understanding corresponding stiffness longitudinal directions.
